Hallo and greetings from Wels, Austria! I have spent four months here and getting to know this city while studying at the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria.
Spare time In Austria
Wels is a smaller city but everything you need is within walking distance. It’s a peaceful place to live with nature close to you. Student life is a bit quieter than in Tampere. While campus gatherings only happen a few times a month, it’s very easy to organize your own hangouts with friends. During the winter, the cozy Christmas markets and festive lights made the colder months truly special.
I traveled a lot around Austria and to nearby countries like the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Slovenia. Traveling from Wels is very easy because the train connections are great. The best part of my exchange was definitely the hiking and the beautiful nature. I also loved meeting new friends and learning about the local culture.
Studying in Finland compared to Austria
The academic culture here was different from Tampere. Lessons are longer, often four hours, but they are held less often. The ECTS credits are weighed differently, requiring more courses to reach the 30 ECTS goal. Generally, the atmosphere in Austrian classrooms feels more formal compared to the relaxed atmosphere back home in Finland.
Overall, my exchange in Wels was unforgettable experience! I met amazing people, had the change to travel and made so many memories.
