When I applied for the exchange semester, I was hoping for new experiences, maybe personal growth. I wasn’t looking for love. But sometimes the most beautiful things happen when you least expect them.
In the middle of intense study weeks, adapting to a new culture, and exploring campus life, I met someone who changed everything. What started as a conversation between two strangers in a new environment slowly turned into something deeper—something real.
The biggest difference I noticed was the academic pressure. In Türkiye, the system is more intense, with constant exams and assignments. In Finland, the approach feels healthier to me—more focused on learning than on testing. I really appreciate the balance Finnish education offers.
Even with the academic pressure, I found joy in the small moments. One of my favorite things to do was to grab a Starbucks coffee on campus and relax. But the true highlight was the open buffet called Çatı—it was the best food experience on campus! Delicious meals, variety, and a cozy atmosphere made it a daily treat.
Outside of campus, I enjoyed exploring Ankara and getting to know Turkish culture. The people were kind, open, and made me feel welcome right away. That said, I truly enjoyed the energy of Bilkent and the warmth of Turkish people and more than that, I met the love of my life during this exchange. It’s something I never expected, and it has made my time in Türkiye unforgettable.
Looking back, this exchange gave me more than academic credits or cultural exposure—it gave me love, emotional growth, and someone I now can’t imagine my life without.
