Finnishness

When I think what I value the most about being Finnish, the first thing that comes in to my mind is the constant closeness to nature. I have lived almost my whole life in a small city and always loved to wonder in the woods or sit by the sea and watch it’s endless waves. I think we are very lucky to live so near to the nature even if we are in the biggest cities in Finland.

Finns have the reputation to be quite introverted people, who hate to talk to strangers. I think that’s starting to change, according to my own experiences. Quite often I change a sentence or two with strangers or compliment someone on their outfit or something else. I think it’s nice that small talk is more common in these days than it used to be.

We are also known to be heavy drinkers of alcohol and I can’t argue with that. We like to have fun and for many of us alcohol is in big part of that. For us students there is plenty of parties during the schoolyear and they are very popular. But in these days, many people are also starting to choose healthier alcohol-free lifestyle which is nice.

One thing that attracts tourists is our four seasons. In autumn there is beautiful fall colors on trees. Winters are usually really cold, especially January and February. In winter people like to go skiing to northern Finland where is many ski resorts and lots of snow. I don’t appreciate the changing of the season so much, if I got to choose there would be endless summer in Finland! I like summer the most mostly because of the sun and warmth of course. But I think we Finns are the most happiest and alive in the summer, everybody is smiling and being nice to each other. Also the light is one of the best parts, it’s so easy to wake up in the mornings when the sun is shining already, and warm, sunny summernights are something that I really miss in the winter time.
