Exploring Finnishness: A Personal Reflection on Finnish Culture

Living abroad twice has given me a new appreciation for the peace and safety that Finland offers. Although I’ve had the opportunity to experience different cultures, there’s something truly unique about the sense of security and tranquility that defines life in Finland. It’s hard to put into words, but it's the peace in our daily lives, the clean air, the open spaces, and knowing that my whole family is here with me. Finland is more than just a place, it’s where I feel truly at home.

One of the first things that strikes you when you step into Finland is the quietness. The peaceful atmosphere is something I’ve always taken for granted, but after spending time abroad, I’ve realized just how rare and precious it is. From the serene lakes and forests to the calmness of the cities, Finland is a country where you can breathe freely, both physically and mentally.

Whether I’m walking through the streets of Tampere or spending a quiet afternoon in the countryside, there’s a sense of calm that pervades the air. People don’t rush, and there’s a deep respect for personal space. This peace allows me to truly slow down and appreciate the little things and this is something that I often missed during my time abroad.

After living abroad, I’ve come to realize just how much peace, safety, and the connection to nature shape my identity as a Finn. While I may not feel like the stereotypical “Finn” at times, these values are deeply embedded in my sense of belonging. The sense of security I feel here, knowing my family is safe and that I can enjoy clean air and water, makes me incredibly proud to call Finland home.

In the end, it’s not just about the physical aspects of Finland—it’s about the peace that comes from living in a country where the basic needs of safety, cleanliness, and tranquility are not only met but embraced. This is the Finland I hold dear, and it’s the Finland I’ll always return to.
