Finnish nature and culture

Finnish lake

This blog text is about what Finnishness means to me and especially how significant part the nature is for people in Finland.

People in Finland are usually known for their greater need to have a personal space. Foreign people might think that it is rude or strange to be completely silent with each other but for us Finns there is much more behind that need.

Finland is a country of thousands of lakes and amazing nature with four clearly visible seasons throughout the years. As we have so big country compared to our population, Finnish people usually loves to be in nature and for some, it might be the best place to be on your own and with your own thoughts. As we have long and cold winter, it feels like every spring all the people in Finland starts to wake up at the same time than trees and forests does. Spring and summertime is usually the best what comes to doing activities outside but still our winters are the most beautiful in the world even though it might get very cold.

Below image is taken late August. In fall-time, Finnish people are eager to utilize the fruits of their nature and many people enjoy to pick-up mushrooms from the forest. This red mushroom thus is not okay to eat, it is venomous:)

Other thing related to Finnish peace and calmness is Sauna. No matter if you live in an apartment in a big city or a cottage-type house, almost all of the Finnish home’s have their own sauna. Surely the best experience is gotten when sauna is nearby the lake where you can go swim after the heat of sauna. This is common habit also in the middle of the winter as well, then there will be a small hole made in the ice and surely the water is freezing but that’s why you have the sauna nearby 😉

Both Finnish nature and sauna is almost like holy places for Finns. We respect our nature and our culture a lot and wish all the people coming to our country will do the same. We have this amazing land and forests to give us peace and enjoyment throughout the years.
