Finnishness

To me Finnishness brings up few things: Nature, silence, sauna and coffee...a lot of coffee

You don’t even realize cleanliness until you travel abroad. Here you can drink tap water without worry and swim in a lake without fear of having unwanted little friends under your skin. Finnish nature also provides a lot, such as berries, mushrooms, fish, and game. Anyone can pick berries and mushrooms at any time without a special permit.

And then there’s our reservedness and silence. On the bus we prefer to sit at least two seats away from others, and if someone sits next to us, we immediately suspect the worst. But once a Finn finally opens up and the ice is broken, you gain a loyal friend.

For a Finn, the sauna is not just a steam room, but almost a sacred place. That’s where the best ideas, biggest insights, and sometimes even agreements are born. And if nothing else, at least it’s a good excuse to throw off your clothes with friends and sit in silence. The sauna is also known for its tradition, it’s a place where people have been born and where people have died.

Also we Finns are the biggest coffee-drinking nation in the world.
