Finnishness is something that I feel is very personal but recognizable for many. On the surface I would say it’s mostly known for sauna culture or social anxiety and those qualities are not far from the truth although they might be a bit simple taken at face value. For me the quietness is a big part of finnishness, that’s why I find myself longing for some time off on a cabin in the middle of nowhere more often than I want to spend time in the noisy city area.
The older I get the more I appreciate the finnish way of living, short but sweet summers in the summer cottages, long and cold winters also in the cottage, but close to nature and close with friends and family. Going to sauna whenever possible and mostly eating food inspired by other countries, that are more known for their cuisine than Finland.
Finnishness is different for many and that is why it’s difficult to concise it to a sentence but I think “Finnishness is peace and quiet in a lakeside sauna.” ticks the boxes for me.
