Finnishness: Finding Strength in Nature and Sisu

You can define Finnishness in as many ways as there are Finns. What comes to my mind about Finnishness is Finnish nature and sisu. I think nature and sisu are deeply interconnected in Finnish culture, and together they form the backbone of Finnish identity.

Finland’s natural environment is both beautiful and challenging. With long, harsh winters and short summers, living in Finland requires resilience and adaptability. Therefore, I think sisu is an important part of Finnishness. It’s a mindset of endurance, determination, and inner strength.

Nature is connected to sisu, because of the way Finland’s natural environment affects to daily lives and mentality of its people. Finnish nature is not just a harsh, it is also breathtakingly beautiful. Finland is known as the land of a thousand lakes. There are a lot of lakes, forests, and national parks. Seasons can dramatically shift from the cold winter to the summer that is filled with light. This balance of natural beauty and difficulty mirrors sisu itself. The Finnish mindset is about finding strength in overcoming adversity and valuing the quiet beauty that follows. The connection to the nature is more than just aesthetic – it’s a fundamental part of Finnish identity.
