Finnishness is perceived differently by each individual. As someone born and raised in Finland, it may not always be immediately apparent to me. However, upon deeper reflection, I believe Finnishness involves caring for nature, finding joy in it, and spending time with a close-knit group of friends.
For me, growing up involved trips to the forest, picking berries, and fishing with my dad. We have a deep appreciation for nature and all it offers, from the fresh air to the natural treasures it provides.
Nature is also enjoyed with friends that we hold close to us. While Finnish people may be viewed as cold and distant, it’s not that we are like that. It simply takes us time to open up. Once we do, we form lifelong friendships, even if we don’t always communicate regularly.
Finnishness is slow and calm, focusing on small enjoyable moments.
