What first comes to my mind when thinking about Finland and Finnishness in general is its nature. The diversity of Finnish nature is so magical and healing. In Finland, we have the opportunity to experience nature in its different forms throughout all four seasons. As Finns, we have the greenness of nature wherever we go, and I am so grateful to have grown up with it surrounding me. Nothing makes me more thankful and calmer than the beauty of Finnish nature.
Finnish people are also known for their peaceful way of living and keeping to themselves. Some may find it rude, but I think it’s admirable. Finns prefer to keep things quiet and interactions as quick as possible. We find peace in our own space and don’t want to share too much. We only say what needs to be said and then focus on ourselves. I think that also shows the honesty of Finns when communicating. But don’t get me wrong, deep down Finnish people can be very warm and outgoing, but we just show it to the people closest to us. In general, I think that life in Finland is very calm and peaceful. You can hear nature everywhere, people are serene and even the busy streets get quiet during the evenings and nights.
Finnish traditions are one thing that I love the most about Finland. I love that almost every Finnish family has their own summer cottage either by the sea or a lake. During Midsummer, the cities get silent and everyone goes to spend time at their cottages. For me it’s refreshing to get out of the city to breathe the sea air and listen to the waves hitting the rocks. Also going for a swim in the sea straight from the sauna is something incredible that everyone should experience. In general, a sauna is a very sacred place for Finns and almost everyone has one in their home. As a musician, I also have to say that I absolutely love our famous composer, Jean Sibelius. I think that his music represents Finland so well and I get emotional just by listening to it. That makes me feel connected to my beloved Finland.
