My Finnishness

Winter in Finland
Snowmobile trip in Riipi

I have lived in Finland my whole life, first 20 years in Rovaniemi and then two years in Tampere. The difference between these cities is huge, but the same main features still remain.

For me Finnishness means peace of mind. Coming from the countryside I have been used to quietness and long distances. Also nature is nearby anywhere you go. Walking in the woods and swimming in the lakes and rivers are the core of finnish wellbeing. People are who they are and there’s nothing to be ashamed of. Finnishness is knowing everyone in your village but almost never chatting with them, unless you have to. The only way of communication is a little nod with an awkward smile or just putting your hand up when passing with cars.

Finnishness is embracing all the four seasons but hating them when they are on. During the winter we miss summer and vice versa. Finns love to escape the reality to cottages, most of which don’t have running water or electricity. Finnishness is plain food that we still love and would not chance to anything. You are not finnish unless you love sauna, hate swedes and pretend to be social but actually just want to go home.
