The Land of Thousand Lakes

Land of Thousand Lakes

Finland is often called the "Land of a Thousand Lakes" because of the country's vast number of lakes. I never really thought it was anything special until I started traveling more myself.

Although I have always loved Finland, I’ve always been interested in living abroad, and seeing what it’s like compared to living in Finland. One of my favorite things about Finland is the nature, and all the lakes and forests that we have. It never really occurred to me that we have so many lakes until I started traveling abroad and I started to think “Hey, where are all the lakes?”. I love that in Finland most of the time it is easy to find some kind of forest where you can go for example, hiking. There is also the concept of “jokamiehenoikeudet” (every man’s right) which means you have the freedom to enjoy nature, camp, fish, pick berries, plants and mushrooms.

It seems like the more I travel, the more I appreciate the small things about Finland. I know that when I move abroad I’m going to miss a lot of things about Finland. Maybe sometimes it is the case that you have to go far to appreciate the things that are close by.
