It’s not a lie when they say Finland is the happiest country in the world. There’re many reasons why it is such a privilege to live here.

Summer cottages, cozy saunas and safety environment

Finnish people love their own peace. We tend to find ourselves in non-chaotic environment, especially after a long work or school day. Going on walks in the forest, picking up berries and mushrooms, swimming in a lake and going to a sauna is what brings joy. Do not be surprised if a summer cabin has no electricity, running water or flushing toilets. Growing up I didn’t feel like I needed to be aware of unsafeness and I could travel alone to school. It is very typical to even keep your doors unlocked without fear of being robbed.

Who doesn’t like a Scandinavian style?

Simplicity, functionality and a strong connection with nature is a foundation of the Scandinavian lifestyle. Finns tend to put effort and money in their homes as we spend a lot of time there and invite family and friends there. Finns rather invest in homes as it’s viewed as a proven path to long-term wealth. I Finland you can find romantic old apartments in the Helsinki city centre but also warm and modern detached house areas everywhere you go.

Speaking of houses, there is actually a very popular idiom in Finnish that goes like “One’s own home is worth gold”. It’s very typical to use these old sayings, some of which make no sense in today’s world and some which never go old. Finns love to joke as everyone else in the world. However, our humor can be quite dry and subtle with lots of sarcasm. Overall, Finns are friendly and kind. In addition, Finnish people are typically more comfortable with moments of silence in conversation than in other cultures.
