Weather variety in Finland

.

In Finland we have four completely different seasons, which is one of my favorite parts of being a Finn. However, I have noticed that the seasons are also the one thing that Finns complain the most about. In winter people complain about it being too cold, in spring it’s too wet, in summer it is too hot and in the autumn it gets too dark. Many people get seasonal depression in autumn or winter for it being too dark all the time, and we call it kaamosmasennus. Nevertheless, in this post I’ll focus on the good things about summer and winter in Finland.

Summer

If you were to ask from anyone in Finland, what is their favourite season, most of them would answer summer. Many Finns have summer cottages, where they spend a lot of time in the summer. The summer cottages are usually by a lake in some smaller village, where people can relax away from the hustle and bustle of a bigger city.

In summer it never gets dark in the evening, and in my opinion the summer nights are the best part of summer. If I stay in the city I love to sit on the restaurant terraces for hours with friends.

Summer is also the best time to explore another cities in Finland and do some small trips inside Finland with family and friends. Although we get really hot days in the summer sometimes, the summer in Finland is really unpredictable and the weather can vary a lot.

Winter

Finnish winter is very cold, which some people really hate, but in my opinion it is just the perfect opportunity to do some winter activities. Some Finns have or rent a cottage for winter too, not just a summer cottage. The winter cottages are usually near a skiing center, where Finns do downhill skiing and other winter sports. Some people, especially younger adults, rent a cabin to just party with their friends.

My favorite part of winter is definitely Christmas. Almost everyone in Finland celebrate Christmas with their family, and Christmas is very traditional holiday in Finland.

The winter is so cold in Finland, that some people get away from Finland and do travelling in winter. Although the coldness is too much for some people, I personally love that we have so extreme weather variety.
