What Finnishness means to me

Lapland

For many Finns, being Finnish means a strong connection to Finland, its culture, history and nature. It includes a certain kind of identity, including values, traditions and customs that have evolved over the years. When I think about Finnishness, certain things stand out for me.

I come from Lapland, so most of my Finnishness is based on the culture, history and customs of the Lapland region. For a Laplander, proximity to nature is often even more pronounced than elsewhere in Finland. Mountain ranges, vast wilderness areas, northern lights and endless nights are part of everyday life and identity in Lapland. For me, being Finnish means being proud of this unique natural environment and its protection.

In Lapland, communities are often close-knit and cooperation is important, especially in more remote areas. Being Finnish means to me a sense of community, neighbourly support and a strong commitment to the well-being of one’s own region. Sisu, the traditional Finnish resilience, can be particularly meaningful for Laplanders when they face the harsh weather conditions and long distances in Lapland.

In Lapland, Finnishness can be particularly linked to natural values and sustainable development. The protection of nature and the environment is important to many people in Lapland because their economy and culture are closely linked to the surrounding nature.

Through these characteristics, Finnishness in relation to Lapland includes a deep connection to nature, community and cultural diversity, making it a unique and enriched part of Finnishness.
