One of the most important things about Finland for me is our nature – the peace it offers, the joy it brings, and the countless activities we can enjoy throughout the four seasons. During Covid, the number of people visiting national parks increased rapidly, and I think this shows how deeply Finnish people find comfort and safety in the outdoors. Many of our traditions, stories, and cultural values come from this close relationship with nature.
Swimming in lakes during the summer, picking berries in the forest, hiking across the fells in Lapland, skiing and ice-swimming in the winter are just a few of my favorite activities. I spend time in Lapland every winter, and to me, it’s the most beautiful place in the world. There is something so magical about watching the northern lights dance across the sky and experiencing the quiet polar night.

Finnishness also shows through the people. Our traits and habits may sometimes seem unusual or different compared to other cultures, but they are what make us who we are. The Finnish word sisu captures this spirit well, we are persistent, brave, and tough. Finns are also known for being honest, punctual, and humble, not wanting to praise themselves too much.
We appreciate peace and our own personal space. Still, even though we may appear quiet and independent, I think we I think we value a sense of community and the time we get to spend with loved ones.
