Johtoryhmän tilannekatsaus keskittyi seuraavan päivän rehtoraatin tapaamiseen. Rehtoraatti eli rehtori Mari Walls, vararehtorit Maria Sutela (koulutus) ja Juha Teperi (tutkimus) sekä talousjohtaja Heli Huhtala ja provosti Jarmo Takala tulevat keskustelemaan ITC:n johtoryhmän kanssa vuosisuunnitelmasta.
Aloitimme dekaanin & johtoryhmän ”maakuntamatkojen” asioilla. Kaisa Valtee esitteli mahdollista aikataulua tapaamisille, dekaanin kalenterista löytyisi aikoja jo syyskuun lopulle. Tutkimustoimiston Belliard & Hamari ovat suunnitelleet ryhmille ennakkotehtävää ja/tai kyselyä, joiden valmistelemiseen on varattava enemmän aikaa. Näillä näkymin kierrokset alkavat lokakuussa.
Ja pääasiaan, eli rehtoraatin tapaamisen aikatauluun ja puheenvuoroihin. Tiedekunnan vuosisuunnitelma on lähetetty 2.9. katsottavaksi ja nyt rehtoristo on tutustunut siihen. Keskusteluun on varattu kaksi tuntia.

Erinomaisen hyvähenkinen ja mukava keskustelu tiedekunnan tavoitteista. Rehtori kiitti tiedekuntaa erittäin hyvästä vuosisuunnitelman valmistelusta. Tiedekunnan tavoitteet olivat rehtoristonkin mielestä suunnattu kunnianhimoiselle tasolle. Keskustelimme mm. kansainvälistymisestä. Meidän tiedekunnassamme on hyviä englanninkielisiä maisteriohjelmia ja uusi on tulossa ensi vuonna, Sustainable Digital Life Master’s programme alkaa elokuussa 2021. Harkinnassa on lisätä myös englanninkielisiä kandiohjelmia (lähivuosina).
Koulutuksen vararehtori Marja Sutela johdattaa keskustelun tutkintomääriin ja siihen kuinka varsinkin tekniikan aloilla opiskelijat saataisiin valmistumaan paremmin. Etenkin tietotekniikassa työelämä imaisee opiskelijat ja opinnot viivästyvät. Joustavuus suorittamisessa ja monimuotokoulutus avuksi?
Tutkijoiden suurimpia toiveita vuosisuunnittelukyselyssä oli ajan järjestyminen rahoituksen hakemiseen ja tutkimukseen. Tutkimuksen vararehtori Juha Teperi aloitti Lin Yutangin, kiinalais-yhdysvaltalaisen filosofin ja kirjailijan, sanoin ”oleellinen tapahtuu tyhjässä tilassa”. (Nice to know -osastolta: Lin Yutang on toiminut myös Singaporen yliopiston rehtorina).
Yliopiston tutkimukseen liittyvät kysymyksethän tiedekunnalle olivat: Mitä toimenpiteitä tiedekunta aikoo toteuttaa vuonna 2021 tutkimuksen kv. rahoituksen vahvistamiseksi ja toimenpiteet tieteellisen tason vahvistamiseksi.
Keinoina tiedekunta esittää mm. kyselyssäkin esiin nousseet rahoitushakujen tehokas tiedottaminen, tiedon kohdentaminen tutkimusalueiden mukaan, ajan järjestäminen isojen kv.hakemusten tekemiseen mahdollisuuksien mukaan, tutkijoiden tukeminen ja kannustaminen kansainväliseen julkaisemiseen, metataitojen parantaminen jne.
11.9.2020 perjantaina kävimme läpi edellisen päivän antia. Nyt vaan kunnianhimoisia tavoitteita toteuttamaan!

The main topic of Wednesday’s (9.9.2020) is a meeting between the Management group and the Presidents and Provost on Thursday. President Mari Walls, Vice President for Education Marja Sutela and Vice President for Research Juha Teperi and CFO Heli Huhtala and Provost Jarmo Takala in discussions with the ITC Management Group about the annual plan.
We started with the Dean planning ”provincial trips”… Kaisa Valtee presented a possible schedule for the meetings, there would be times in the dean’s calendar for the end of September. Belliard & Hamari have designed a pre-assignment and/or questionnaire for the groups, where more time must be set aside for preparation. With these prospects, the rounds would begin in October.
And next to the main issue, namely the meeting of the president on the schedule and speeches. The faculty’s annual plan has been sent (September 2) and the ”President’s Office” is now familiar with it. Two hours have been set aside for discussion.

An exceptionally good-natured and comfortable discussion of the faculty’s goals. The President thanked the faculty for very good preparation of the annual plan. The faculty’s goals for some, even in the opinion of the ”President’s Office”, are aimed at an ambitious level. We discussed e.g. internationalization. Our faculty has good English-language master’s programs and a new one coming next year, the Master’s program in Sustainable Digital Life will begin in August 2021. More English-language bachelor’s programs are also being considered (in the coming years).
Marja Sutela, the Vice President for Education, will lead the discussion on the number of degrees and this technology in particular for all students who prepare better. Especially in information technology, working life absorbs students and studies are delayed. Flexibility in completion and multidisciplinary training to help?
The researchers ’biggest hopes in the annual planning survey were to arrange time to apply for funding and research. The vice-rector of the study, Juhan Teperi, began in the words of Lin Yutang, a philosopher and author, ”the essential happens in an empty space.” (Lin Yutang has also served as president of the University of Singapore). University questions to the faculty: 1. What should we do as a Faculty to increase international funding significantly? 2. What should we do as a Faculty to increase the number of publications and improve their quality?
The faculty’s proposals were e.g. effective information on funding applications, targeted by research areas, the timing of large international applications where possible, supporting and encouraging researchers to publish internationally, etc., which also emerged in the survey.
On Friday, September 11, 2020, we went through the issue of the previous day. Now but to achieve ambitious goals!
