Ambition vs. Execution: Where Honkai: Star Rail Begins to Falter

Promo artwork from the game Honkai: Star Rail (HoYoverse 2023)
Developed by HoYoverse, Honkai: Star Rail is a turn-based RPG combining role-playing and gacha elements. The game launched with high expectations following the huge success of Genshin Impact (HoYoverse, 2020), featuring an original storyline that upholds the multiverse tradition established by its predecessors.
As a player since the game’s launch, I have always been fond of anime-style role-playing games, especially turn-based games. Evidently, the success of Genshin Impact created a solid, effective “formula” for subsequent titles, whose innovations and elements Honkai: Star Rail clearly drew upon, despite gameplay differences. Since its global launch, the game significantly changed and introduced creative features that met player expectations, yet some features incurred intense controversy within the player base.
Ambitious Storytelling Undermined by Overly Drawn‑Out Narrative Delivery
Despite being an alternative-universe to Honkai Impact 3rd (HoYoVerse, 2016), Honkai: Star Rail presents an entirely original storyline which reimagines familiar characters like Bronya, Himeko in a new setting. Players assume the role of the Trailblazer, an amnesiac protagonist who wields the mysterious power Stellaron. With the Astral Express crew, we travel across diverse worlds, overcome planetary-scale crises and uncover deeper forces shaping the universe. As the story unfolds, diverse situations emerge: from the class struggle in Jarilo-VI, to the beginnings of the Aeon rivalry revealed in Xianzhou Luofu, to the climax of cosmic-level factional conspiracies in Amphoreus – all woven into narratives that bring a meticulously crafted universe to life. The game embraces a high standard that became a challenge for itself as a live-service title, which also influenced the plot’s progression.

After the initial explosive success, Honkai: Star Rail introduced players to a Chinese-culture inspired planet: the Xianzhou Luofu. However, the game’s plot flaws surfaced as many large-scale issues were raised with lackluster resolutions. Ruptures in Honkai: Star Rail’s narrative structure appeared as intertwined relationships between characters are resolved so conveniently and extremely “plot-beneficially.” This creates contradictions within the narrative and undermines the characters’ personalities.
In gacha games, as a practically mandatory design, the protagonist needs to share close bonds and interacts deeply with the characters featured in current banners, who are the primary revenue drivers. However, the dragging storytelling style which utilizes banner time and patch updates almost foreshadowed the game’s future when it came to Amphoreus. Honkai: Star Rail later had to introduce a story skip feature and add summary.
Creative Gameplay Held Back by Monetization‑Driven Balance Issues
Honkai: Star Rail features turn-based gameplay common in classic JRPGs. In my opinion, this is a highly skilled genre that demands both micro-decision skills and strategic thinking. Honkai: Star Rail introduces new systems to enhance players’ experience and refresh gameplay, which serve as their unique selling points compared to renowned titles like Fate/Grand Order or Limbus Company.
However, starting from version 3.0, increasing “power creep” surfaced. It started with how SR (super-rare) characters – a key part to balance gacha gameplay – stopped being released after Moze on August 10, 2024. Since then, only limited SSR characters were released, introducing a meta-race so fast that it pushed imbalance and FOMO to extremes and caused frustration even for long-time players. Endgame content, once a testing ground for team compositions and innovative playstyles, is becoming artificially difficult to boost banner character sales, with HP inflation threatening to make older characters obsolete after a single patch and luck outweighing skill. The version 4.5 update – “Apocalyptic Shadow” – faced intense community backlash over HP inflation in the endgame mode, which made many content creators and players quit the game. I don’t see how newcomers or F2P players could keep up. Personally, I now only log in to play Currency Wars – a standalone mode with auto-chess-inspired gameplay – due to the pure entertainment of freely acquiring characters I don’t own, which the game is gradually losing.

Stunning Visuals Showing Signs of Repetitive Design Fatigue
The obvious strengths of Honkai: Star Rail lie in its sharp anime-style graphics, spectacular combat effects, and above all, its impressive and highly recognizable character designs. The elegant and mysterious design of Kafka, or the majestic airs from a general like Jing Yuan are mesmerizing; yet, from the perspective of a concept artist and a casual player, Honkai: Star Rail‘s design is becoming heavily repetitive. Probably, the rushed pace of new patch updates and the quest for high banner revenue have affected design quality, which induces less polish and more reuse of animations. The gaming community gradually noticed the obvious similarities in the silhouettes of new characters, leading to memes about HoYoverese‘s design in general becoming popular and constantly criticized for its lack of creativity.

A Game of Great Potential Facing Its Own Growing Pains
Overall, Honkai: Star Rail seems to suffer from issues common to gacha games, where practicality and ambition clash. Yet, with solid gameplay and the massive backing from its developer, the game has the resources to address its lingering flaws: narrative shortcomings, balance issues, and formulaic character design. I intend to keep playing Honkai: Star Rail out of long-standing attachment and hope for future changes. The game has great appeal and potential, and it would be a waste if HoYoverse lost the trust of its player base and its identity.
