The Ark

Selin Agic & Anna Mascher

This architectural project envisions a modern-day church in Tampere, Finland, rooted in the biblical narrative of Noah’s Ark. Recognizing the exclusivity of the area, the design seeks to foster inclusivity by addressing contemporary global issues, such as climate change, flooding, and displacement. Drawing parallels between the Ark and the escalating challenges of climate crises and climate refugees, the project aims to create a space where individuals can gather, find safety, and nurture mutual understanding. The central concept positions the church as a metaphorical ship – a sanctuary of refuge and hope. Complementing this is the “harbor,” which houses commercial spaces, and the “dock,” a transitional area that bridges the church and harbor. This symbolic and physical integration reflects the ethos of connecting the sacred with the secular, creating a dynamic space that is welcoming, transformative, and accessible to all. Through its innovative use of metaphors and spatial design, the project not only addresses the urgent need for inclusivity but also emphasizes unity, resilience, and shared human experiences. It aspires to provide a safe haven where people from diverse backgrounds can come together, build connections, and reflect on the shared challenges and opportunities of the future. By blending functionality with meaning, this modern Noah’s Ark offers a beacon of hope and community in an evolving world.
