human nature

Antero Rummukainen

The spirit of our time is constant and ever-increasing change. The museum will explore and reflect this concept of change, while also retaining a link to the past. This dynamic between old and new, history and future gives form to the museum. By saving most of the wooden structures of the current terminal building, turning the building towards the city center while gradually changing the form to more organic, the museum becomes a physical manifestation of the spirit of our time.

The shape of the museum, changing from an industrial shape to organic, also reminds us of our relationship with nature and our responsibility toward it. The biggest change of our time concerns the dynamic between nature and humans. The nature that has always inspired architecture and design and been a fundamental part and provider of our existence, is becoming more and more dependent on us and our self-absorbed human nature.

The ground floor, reusing the old wooden structures of the current terminal building, is a free space open for everyone, with free exhibitions, design and architecture workshops and reservable studio spaces. Architecture and design are forms of art that especially touch each of us daily, and so everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy them freely in the new museum.

The adjustable exhibition spaces on the upper floor are paid, with the ticket counter in connection with the museum shop near the entrance. The library on two floors above the café also extends the free public space to the upper floor.
