Some people never swear, some swear once in a while and for some, it’s like blinking eyes.
This blog post could be about how “swearing is uncivilized” but it is 2020. Generation Z is a gen of memes, internet forums, and anonymous commenting. Generation of developed skills to break down data and find the information that interests them. Stimulations such as background sounds or a few swear words do not cause a startle. And this is the generation starting to reach adulthood and workplaces.
“You’re a fine lady, clean up your language,” disciplines an unknown person in the coffee shop. Well, fuck you random Millenial / older person. You’re getting outdated!
Not so long ago, dialects were seen as a language of yokels and uncultured. However, the image nowadays is very different. Writers of good dialect skills are torn out of hand. Knowing the standard language and its rules are obviously still kept in high value, but dialects have gotten their own respected place.
In addition to the fact that swearing is getting more and more common in day-to-day life, it has begun to conquer space in good quality branding. Both on a personal and corporate level. Swearing is not only a huge possibility for forerunner individuals and corporations, but also for our beloved country.
Finland and Finnish are praised for amazing swear words and their earthy power. It’s a known fact that many bilingual people, for example, Finnish Swedish, swear almost always in Finnish. “Åh jävla” or other non-Finnish options are rarely heard if the speaker has access to Finnish alternatives.
It is completely normal if swearing still sounds “uncivilized” or “ugly” to you. It will take time and effort to forget parents’ and grandparents’ lectures from childhood. The unfortunate fact, however, is that those lectures will get old at some point. Even though you wouldn’t be lagging behind yet, it might happen in the near future.
Whether anyone wants it or not, every generation changes the world and communication with it. If swearing makes your switch go click, it might be a good time to learn how to suck it up and concentrate on the important things.

p.s. This post is made to provocate and invite reflection.
Swearing has (had) its time and place, but from time to time it is clever to reflect and think outside the old box. A broader understanding might come handy in the future.
