Today we went on a hike in the forest in Hervanta. The weather is already getting a bit colder, but it was a good day for a hike.
While we were walking, we talked about the traditional ‘Dirndl’ dresses they have in Germany. Emma wears them to a lot of celebrations like family parties. Anna only wears them to the Oktoberfest in the big city. We told them we don’t have a traditional party outfit in The Netherlands. But when the Dutch national team plays soccer all the Dutch fans are wearing orange to support them!
Anna and Emma said they knew a lot of German hiking songs. They tried to teach us ‘’Das Wandern ist des Müllers Lust’’. I don’t remember exactly what it means, but it was fun to listen to, but hard to remember the words…
We told them that Dutch people don’t hike that much. Of course it depends on the person, but we are more a biking country. We told them that in Amsterdam there are more bikes than people in that city. That’s crazy if you think about it.
We also taught each other these words:
English German Dutch
Root Wurzel Wortel
Tree Baum Boom
Lake See Meer
Again, these words look very similar to each other. But if you look at the Lake one it is very different. The funny thing about this is that ‘See’ is ‘Sea’ in Dutch but with a Z (Zee). So, it was kind of confusing, because I would think it was the sea, but apparently it means lake. That was a nice one to learn!
