For the second meeting our Finnish/German learning group went food shopping together and after that prepared a nice traditional German dinner with a Finnish dessert. The main dish was a combination of mashed potatoes, vegetarian schnitzel, and sauerkraut, the famous German side dish. For dessert we made Runeberg’s tarts.
We German learners learned a lot of new vocabulary relating to shopping and cooking. Also, on the way back from the grocery store, we encountered some ducks and wanted then of course know some nature related words. Here is some of the vocabulary we learned:
der Einkaufswagen = shopping cart
der Einkaufskorb = shopping basket
die Ente = a duck
das Besteck = dishes
ab/gießen / kippen / schütten = to pour
der Schneebesen = a whisk
das Sieb = a strainer
We had a nice time cooking and eating, and we also discussed a lot about the cultural differences between Germany, Finland and Hungary. It was especially interesting to hear about the German and Hungarian school systems.
