04.10 Nature Hiking!

Today, we met at the school for what was supposed to be a simple walk, but it turned into a much longer hike than expected. We started at the school, passed through the Soukonvuori Nature Reserve, and finally reached the edge of Lake Niihama. In total, we walked 8.8 kilometers, and as the distance grew longer, we started to feel a bit tired. However, we were all very happy when we finally reached the bus stop. It was a tough but rewarding day.

As we hiked, we talked, and time passed quickly. Our main topic of conversation was the differences in the education systems of our countries. I shared how, in Korea, students have limited options when moving from middle school to high school and how intense the competition is. Emese found such a competitive environment quite unfamiliar.

Melina also explained the French education system, which was quite unique. She mentioned that in France, school is mandatory from the age of 3, whereas in Korea, children typically start school at 6, or 7 by Korean age. In France, children begin their education much earlier, but the process seems a bit more relaxed through middle and high school. I found that quite enviable.

We also discussed cultural differences between our countries. For example, we talked about Christmas traditions, which I found fascinating. Emese mentioned that in Germany, they cut down Christmas trees directly from the forest, which I thought was an incredibly charming tradition. In Korea, while we do celebrate Christmas, gift-giving is often more common between couples or close friends rather than among family members, which is quite different from France and Germany.

Although the hike was physically demanding, our conversations helped lighten the mood, and it was a great opportunity to understand and learn more about each other’s cultures. It was a tiring but truly meaningful day, as we shared stories and gained new perspectives from one another.
