Meeting 5: Moomins and Germany's Next Top Model

We had a language-filled Zoom movie night

For our fifth German/Finnish group meeting we had a nice Zoom “movie night”. Even though everyone was at home with their laptops, the spirit was high as we had fun watching shows and learning German/Finnish.

For the German part, we watched the beginning episode for Germany’s next top model. It was interesting to see, how much I could understand and how much I couldn’t, as there were no subtitles. We chatted a lot about different dialects that came up in the show. For example, I found out that in some parts of Germany, “ich” (I) is pronounced “ikke”.

In addition to dialects, I learned many small words that come up in real life German conversations but not in written text. These were words like “krass” = crazy cool/surprised, “eben” = really/gives weight to a topic and “geil” = cool/but only older people use this word. I have wondered about the meaning of these many times before, so it was nice to get some clarification to them.

For the Finnish learning section, we watched the first episode of Moomins. I introduced the characters to others and presented some vocabulary relevant for understanding the episode. Afterwards, we chatted about similarly popular children’s tv-shows in Germany. I am going to give them a watch!
