For our 6th meeting our group met at the Moomin museum. We wandered through the exhibition about a famous Finnish storyteller Tove Jansson and her creation, The Moomins. While touring we tried to have some conversations in German. It was a learning experience as I tried to explain the plot lines of the Moomin stories in German. I also learned a lot of German vocabulary related to museums. Others tried to learn some new Finnish vocabulary and get to know this famous part of Finnish culture.
Some vocabulary I learned:
tour = die Führung
guide = der/die Tourführer/in
scary = unheimlig
treasure = der Schatz
invisible = unsichtbar
I found it very beneficial for my learning to discuss in German in a real-life setting: this way I understood, how I had used some words in wrong contexts. For example, I learned that zu malen means to paint and to draw, but when drawing gets very detailed the verb zu zeichnen is used. I had though that zu zeichnen goes for all kinds of drawing, but now I understood how to use these verbs correctly.
