Meeting 8: Card games

Card games from around the world

For our eighth meeting we met to play card games. We taught each other different card games from Hungary, Finland and Germany. I taught others Finnish games “risti seiska” and “lännen nopein”. It was fun to learn new games, and at the same time realize how some games are the same everywhere. For example, “susipeli” was played in Germany as well as in Finland in student circles. This is not a card game and would last quite long so we skipped it this time but it was interesting to hear about the similarity of student culture in different places.

While playing I learned a lot of the terms needed to play (card) games in German. The terms were relatively different in their literal meaning, which was surprising for me. For example, suits in Finnish is “maat” and its literal meaning is “countries” – whereas in German suits translates to Farben, meaning different colors. Here are some of the terms and phrases I learned:

  • suits (“maat” in Finnish) = Farben
  • spades = Pik
  • diamonds = Karo
  • your turn = dein Zug / du bist am Zug / du bist dran
