Week 9: Glögi meet up and cultural cooking

This week we decided to do a small Glögi meetup at my place to get in to the Christmas spirit. The others had made very tasty cookies which went very well with the warm Glögg. I recommend everyone to do a nice meetup like this. Since there were a lot of choices in the cookies both vegan and lactose free, we started talking about the cooking project and ended up talking about our cultural dishes. For example, one of the most popular dishes in the Netherlands is stamppot. Which is basically just mashed potatoes mixed with vegetables. Most of the time it’s also accompanied with a sausage or other filé. One of the German dishes which I think sounds very nice is the sauerbraten. Its marinated beef soaked in vinegar, water and different spices. The meat is supposed to come out very flavorful and tender. So, I’d love to try it sometime!
As for the popular dishes in Finland it was hard to pick one since they’re all new to me. I decided on the interesting karjalanpiirakka. Even though online it’s more described as a pastry made from rye and rice porridge. The ones I’ve tasted had more flavor to them so there might be a lot of variations. I general I like the karjalanpiirakka you can get from cafés and other food places. It’s a unique pastry and I highly recommend trying it ones.
