Life in Madrid
Madrid is a city that never really slows down. Everyday life felt social and energetic, whether it was grabbing coffee, walking through busy neighborhoods, or sitting for hours at a restaurant with friends. Eating out was a big part of daily life, and tapas made it easy to share food and time together.

People, parties, and community
One of the best parts of the exchange was the people. Through Erasmus events, shared flat, and spontaneous plans, I met students from all over Europe and beyond. Parties often started late and lasted until morning, but just as important were the long conversations, shared meals, and trips that turned strangers into close friends in no time.

Travelling and exploring
Madrid’s central location made travelling easy (but not cheap). During the semester, I explored different parts of Spain and experienced how diverse the country really is. Even within Madrid, every neighborhood felt different, and there was always something new to see, do, or taste.

Studying in Spain vs Finland
Studying in Spain felt quite different from studying in Finland. In Spain, the academic culture was more structured and demanding, with strict attendance, frequent exams, and a strong focus on classroom presence. In Finland, studies tend to be more flexible and based on independent work and trust in students.
Final thoughts
My exchange semester in Madrid was a mix of freedom, growth, and unforgettable experiences. Living in such a vibrant city pushed me out of my comfort zone and taught me to be more open and spontaneous. It’s and experience I will carry with me long after returning home.
