My exchange period here has been full of unforgettable experiences, new learning, and adapting to the local culture.
This city is full of energy, stunning architecture, and events that make everyday life lively and unique.
Studying in Barcelona has been very interesting and different. I study computer science, and one of the most surprising things has been coding on paper! Also, exam results are published on a shared sheet for all students to see, which is very different from Finland. The Spanish learning style focuses on group work and teamwork, and teachers encourage constant interaction. In addition, every course has included presentations, which has helped me improve my presentation skills and confidence.
Spare time in Barcelona has been full of adventures! The city offers endless sights to explore, and I have loved walking past the Sagrada Familia, discovering the beautiful views of Parc Güell, and spending time at Barceloneta beach. Local festivals, such as La Mercè, have been unforgettable – they have a sense of community and joy that I have never experienced anywhere else.
Food has been one of the highlights here. Tapas, paella, and churros have quickly become my favorite dishes! It was also fun to learn that dinners here start late, often around 9 p.m. Evenings in restaurants are spent for a long time with friends, and the atmosphere is relaxed and warm.
Spanish and Finnish cultures are very different when it comes to studying and working. Days in Barcelona move at a slower pace. Lunch breaks can last up to two hours, and many things stretch into the evening. Group work and interaction are at the center of everything here, which has taught me a lot about the importance of collaboration and flexibility. In Spain, things are taken more casually, which allows room for creativity and living in the moment. However, this flexibility can sometimes bring challenges when schedules get delayed.
