Dark days, sauna and salmiakki

What Finnishness Means to Me

To me, Finnishness is defined by dark days and sunny nights, solitude and community, and, of course, salmiakki.

Endless Dark and Nightless Nights
A defining aspect of Finnishness is the stark contrast between our long, dark winters and our bright, almost endless summer days. While some embrace the winter, finding joy in the snow and the cozy darkness, many of us live in anticipation of summer’s arrival. Yet, when summer finally comes, there’s an almost palpable pressure to make the most of it—to soak in every ray of sunlight and every moment of warmth. This dynamic creates a unique relationship with nature; it’s something we deeply appreciate, no matter the season. Finnish summers, with their light-filled nights and a certain “buzz”, feel unlike anything else in the world. And while the stereotype paints Finns as thriving in ice and snow, I believe it’s the summer that truly brings out our best.

Community and Solitude
Finns are often described as introverted, valuing solitude and our own space. I think there’s truth to this; a core part of Finnishness is the ability to enjoy and reflect on one’s own thoughts. It’s a skill I deeply admire. Yet, Finnishness isn’t just about being alone – it’s also about coming together as a community. Sauna culture embodies this balance perfectly. There’s something remarkable about the way saunas create a space where friends and strangers alike can share an intimate, unguarded experience. Some of the most meaningful conversations I’ve had happened in a sauna, where the atmosphere is quite unlike any other community experience. Beyond this, Finnishness also reflects a quiet solidarity—a sense of having each other’s backs, even without words, especially during challenging times.

Salmiakki
No discussion about Finnishness would be complete without mentioning salmiakki. In many ways, this unique licorice candy symbolizes Finland itself. Much like Finnish culture, salmiakki is an acquired taste. At first, it may seem unfamiliar or even strange, but over time, it grows on you. Eventually, it clicks, and you realize it’s not just unique—it’s something special.
