Finland like many country has many things to be happy about. We get to live in a country with beautiful nature, lots of fun traditions and an iconic culture. Sometimes I wonder what Finnish culture truly is. If I think of other countries the main aspects come to my mind much easier than Finland’s. We don’t really have that popular of a food culture, our language is barely spoken and we are also a very small country in the grand scheme of things. But I think Finnish culture comes to fruition in the little things.
Finnish language is spoken pretty much only in Finland and even some places in Finland don’t speak it. But that makes it all the better. If you are ever abroad there is a good chance you have your secret language nobody else understands that also happens to be one of the more complicated ones. Good luck learning that one. And we get to indulge in Finnish humor and comedy that comes from the Finnish language. I might be biased but even though Finnish comedies might not be the funniest, the regular conversations sure are. Our way of emphasizing things and the phrases we use are so unique and comedic. Finnish people can’t help but to say certain things at certain times. I dread for the day that nobody doesn’t mention that the first peace of cake is the hardest to cut when someone is cutting a cake.
Finland has one of the most interesting cultures in terms of work ethic and lifestyle. We have the polar opposites of detoxing in a sauna and intoxicating yourself in your underwear be the two cornerstones of our culture. Of course the two are often combined for the perfect mixture. Being Finnish has certain stress free aspects. You are never expected to be social. So just minding your own business is completely fine in most circumstances. Now these positives come with negatives also, but this post is focusing on the positive aspects.
While thinking about the country you live in it is easy to focus on the negative. Reflecting makes the positives feel overwhelming compared to the negative.
