My Experience of Finnishness

What makes Finland special? Think endless lakes, deep forests, four different seasons, and a culture that values silence as much as saunas.

If someone would ask me to describe Finland, I would say it is a small land full of lakes, forests, and quiet people. Finns are known for their love of nature, honesty, and personal space. We have 4 totally different seasons and that´s a really unique thing. In the summer it´s up to +30 Celcius and in the winter it can be -30 Celcius. Also, Finns are huge fans of coffee and we have our own kind of coffee culture. If you think that coffee is a big thing in Finland, let´s not even start with the sauna.

Finns believe in saying only what needs to be said. Small talk? Not their thing. They prefer going straight to the point. If a Finn is not talking, they are probably just thinking. In Finland silence is not awkward, it is comfortable. They also value personal space. In the bus stop, remember to keep at least two meters distance to the next person.

Finnishness is all about balance. Honesty without rudeness, independence without arrogance, and quietness that´s totally fine. It´s shaped by the beautiful but sometimes harsh nature and environment, where you learn to rely on yourself and maybe a sauna or two to unwind.

So, if you ever visit Finland, embrace the calm, enjoy the silence, and respect the space. You will find that under the reserved surface, Finns are warm, reliable, and have a quirky sense of humor
–just like their obsession with Moomins and salty licorice.
