Some thoughts about Finnishness

I step out of the sauna. I take my towel and a bottle of beer. Walking down the stairs, I feel how the soft wind sweeps my face. I look at the darkening sky and hear some lonely blackbird whispering. Time stands still and I know I’m safe here.

For me, finnishness is somehow a mix of a nature, peace and presence.

I have always enjoyed spending time in nature. When I was young we had a big garden where I sat happily in the middle of the forget-me-nots and some playing squirrels. I grew up in the arms of the Mother Nature. In Finland we are used to have four seasons (hope it will last in future, too). I like them all. Skiing in winter, picking berries in autumn, swimming and going to sauna in summer, wandering in forest paths in spring. It is simply wonderful what nature gives.

I’m privileged to have been born here in Finland. I think that Finland is in the head of equality, education and society system. Of course we have our problems and difficulties, but in a large scale I feel still pretty proud of our country. I think it’s great that we can f.ex get some financial support for our university studies and living. It’s not usual in other countries.

Many Finnish classical composer has been part of my journey into pianistic career. Sibelius and O. Merikanto (among others) may be the most popular ones. Their music touches Finnish people without words. This music is also part of our cultural heritage which we need to carry with proud.
