Today we went to Ikea in Tampere. The weather was not that nice, so we wanted to do something inside, but something different than going to a café. So we came up with Ikea. Some of us were going to a party tonight so we started talking about the drinking culture in our countries.
In Germany if you’re younger than 16 you can’t buy any alcohol, but is it permitted to drink it in public if they are accompanied by a legal guardian. If you’re over 16, you can legally buy and drink wine or beer. If you’re over 18 you can buy and drink all legally available alcoholic drinks.
I thought it was crazy you could buy beer/wine at the age of 16. We told them that in The Netherlands you can only buy and drink alcohol if you’re 18 or older. That’s actually a big difference. A lot of years ago we had the same rule (legally drink beer/wine at 16) but the government changed it to 18. And it has been 18 ever since. I think it is good that its 18+. When I think of myself at the age of 16, I still felt like a child.
We told them that Heineken is the most famous brand from The Netherlands. We also have two drinks that are typically Dutch: Dropshot (licorice shot) and Stroopwafel shot (tastes like the popular stroopwafel cookie).
They told us Germany is a country of beer drinkers. There are a lot of popular beer brands. And these were the top 5 beer brands in Bavaria: Augustiner-Bräu, Hofbräuhaus, Paulaner, Erdinger, Spaten-Franziskaner-Bräu
The next time that I would visit Germany I would really try one of those!
