We decided to have a storytelling session over coffee. I told a traditional Punjabi story in simple Finnish, and Ilias shared a childhood memory in Spanish. The goal was to practise storytelling and listening comprehension in both languages.
I really enjoyed this session. Listening to Ilias’s story helped me practise Spanish comprehension in a relaxed way, and telling my story in Finnish gave me the chance to help him with new vocabulary. It felt personal and emotional, not just linguistic.
Something unexpected I realised was how stories can build strong connections. I remembered the Spanish words from his story better because I associated them with his personal experiences.
The challenge was fluency while telling my story in Spanish. I often paused to find the right words. But Ilias supported me by paraphrasing or giving hints. We changed the plan a bit to focus more on storytelling than grammar, and it was definitely a good choice.
