Meeting 8: Drinks

Ginger Beer, Gluhwein, and Glögi because we are in Finland after all.

This meeting was very relaxed, I mean we just talked a little about drinks. And what better time than the Christmas season? Hanna, Fabian and myself along with some other friends had ginger beer. Ginger beer is a drink that is made in the Caribbean and although it is no Guavaberry rum, a St. Martin staple, it still reminds me of home and I was elated to share any version of it.

I explained how ginger beer is made and we got to taste ginger beer from the Finnish supermarket. I am happy to report that ginger beer won over everyone! I mean, it is definitely an acquired taste, so I was thoroughly satisfied when I learned that it was a hit.

During our meeting I also learned a little about Gluhwein, apparently, Germans usually just buy it because it’s not something that is made by individuals. Whenever I think about Gluhwein, I always reminisce on my first experience where I didn’t know that it was meant to be served hot. And because this story is so funny to me, I always share it every chance I get. Always happy to get a good laugh out of my first culture shocks moving to Europe.

Since we are in Finland, we ended the night drinking some warm Glögi. I have a joke here too because believe it or not, I say “Go-Glee” instead of “Glo-gi” giving everyone another laugh for the night. It was truly special. I live for these moments.
