Meeting 6: Verbs and Past Tense Practice

6

We met at the library again to focus on verbs, especially in the present and past tense. Rajdeep taught me ten common Finnish verbs like olla (to be), mennä (to go), and syödä (to eat), and their conjugations. I helped him do the same in Spanish with verbs like ser, ir, and comer. We made short dialogues to practise everyday actions and past experiences.

I can now recognize and use some Finnish verbs more confidently, especially in the present tense. The past tense is still challenging, but I’ve started to understand how the forms change. Teaching Rajdeep Spanish verbs made me more aware of how irregular they are, something I never fully realised before.

An unexpected learning moment was when Rajdeep explained the Finnish negative forms. It made me reflect on how different linguistic systems can be and how sometimes I have to change the way I think, not just memorize words.

The biggest difficulty was memorisation. Finnish verb endings are quite different, and I kept mixing them up. We followed the plan closely, focusing on verbs, but spent more time than expected on the past tense because both of us found it tricky.
