Visiting the Moomin museum

On our sixth meeting, we decided to visit the Moomin museum, to learn more about this cute (and also kind of dark/scary) iconic cartoon series, after we have watched one episode in our last meeting.

During the visit in the museum, we exchanged typical words in Finnish and German (museum tour, tour guide, exhibition, treasure chest, painting, drawing, sketch). The museum was a very interesting environment to learn more about Finnish culture and words, but also sharing the same words in German with the German learners. It was easy, to teach and learn new words that way, as we just had to point at some exhibit in a showcase and be like “What’s that in Finnish?”.
It was nice to learn more about the story behind the Moomin sketches on display, about some exhibits and about the author Tove Jansson. We also managed to participate in a workshop for paper-animation and created a short video, which very funny. Some of the words I have learned that day were:
  • näyttely = exhibition
  • matto = carpet
  • talo = house
  • rakenus = building (where noone lives in, for example the Moomin museum)
