Meeting 7: German Carnival Culture

This time was for chatting about German carnival culture

For our seventh meeting we had planned to discuss about German carnival culture. One of us explained what the German carnival week is about with different themed days like Rosenmontag. I had never heard of this event with parades and celebrations before. It was interesting!

We continued to chat about the traditional culture of Germany and about Finnish and Hungarian celebrations as well. We talked a lot about how in Middle Europe bakery culture seems to be more popular than in Finland, though this was only a discussion based on our personal experience. I also learned some vocabulary:

die Metzgerei = butchery

die Fleischtheke = meat counter at a store

der Aprilscherztag = April Fool’s Day

der Umzug = parade

While talking I tried to react in German and others in Finnish, but we realized we only knew a few expressions. Therefore, we also taught each other some new expressions like “genial” or “herlich” in German instead of always replying with “schön” = “nice”.
