My name is Emma and I study radiography for the third year in Tampere. I spent three months in exchange in Norway in the city of Bergen. There I took two courses at Høgskulen på Vestlandet, which is a university of applied sciences. In addition I completed five weeks of practical training in a local hospital’s radiologic department practicing computed tomography examinations. The language used in studies was English but during my practical training I also communicated in Norwegian with the patients. School and clinical training in Norway were very similar to Finland to be honest. There were only some little differencies in the ways of working. The biggest shock for me was price of the food at school and hospital. Eating a lunch or dinner costs 6-7 euros even if you are a student. Because of this, many people brought their own snacks or lunch.
I mostly spent my free time meeting other students or skiing or hiking in the mountains, which a large number of Norwegians also do in their free time. Luckily the weather in Bergen was not as terrible as I expected. Yes, it rains pretty much in Bergen but we also got a lot of beautiful and sunny days and at least some of the rain comes as snow during winter. Usually the weather forecasts are also very accurate, so you know what to prepare for. And as the Norwegians say: Det finnes ikke dårlig vær, bare dårlig klær! (There is no bad weather, only bad clothes) and I absolutely agree with that.
