Finnishness

In this blog post I will tell you how I see Finnishness and what it means to me.

I have heard that foreign people thinks Finns are quiet, maybe even a bit strange and perhaps difficult to approach. These things may be somewhat true, but when you get to know Finns and real Finnish mentality, you will be amazed at what they are really like.

To me, Finnishness means Finnish mentality. Finnish mentality means reliability, courage, diligence and not giving up when times get hard. The Finnish mentality began to take shape during the times when Finland was at war and the people fought for the independence of our country. Even then it became clear that a Finn will not give up neither leave a friend behind.

From my own experience, having a Finn with the Finnish mentality for example as a co-worker or as a partner in a group work at school is like winning the lottery. You can always be sure that everyone is doing their part and things are done properly. And what’s even better than a Finn as a colleague? A Finn as a friend. A Finnish friend will always be the rational voice of reason and won’t let you do stupid things… At least alone.

I think everyone should follow the example of the Finnish mentality. Lucky for me, it’s in my blood.
