Finnishness is Trust

Did you know that in a 2013 global experiment, Helsinki ranked as the world's most honest city after 11 out of 12 dropped wallets were safely returned back to their owners?

If you were to lose your wallet at the Helsinki train station, the probability of getting it back would be very high. I experienced this firsthand when I dropped my wallet in Tampere. After a brief search, it was found at a nearby Hesburger. I was told that a man had found it in a snow pile next to the tram tracks and turned it in to the nearest business. With everything still neatly inside my wallet, I walked home, happy to be in Finland.

When I think of Finnishness, trust is the first thing that comes to mind. Trust serves as the foundation for strong relationships, great workplaces, and Finland’s consistent ranking as the world’s happiest country.

Knowing you are in trustworthy hands leaves more time for your favourite Finnish activities: having discussions with strangers in a public sauna, foraging in untouched forests, and, of course, casually losing your wallet just to experience the thrill of having it returned.
