My Finnishness

Tampere in the summer

When I think about my connection to my Finnishness two things come to mind: Nature and student life. They have played a big part in my feeling of belonging and identity as a Finn.

All the way from my childhood, nature’s been a big part of my life. I grew up in the middle of the forest and back then it was just a part of my playground. We used to spend hours outside in our yard and in the forest, playing, foraging and observing insects. In the fall time, we our forest would grow berries that we would collect and use in food. Some we would eat with porridge, some were baked into pies and most were frozen to be used later. We would even collect some for school to be used in jams in the canteen. We would also collect the forest flowers to bring in for mom, of which my favoorite to collect was the arctic starflower. We would also take trips all over finland to go on hikes. My favourite memories from these hikes are from Lapland, when we hiked the arctic hills.

In the resent years I’ve been putting my connection to nature more on the side as another big part of my Finnishness has taken the fore front, my student life. I remember growing up, seeing the multi coloured masses in overalls in the cities and stating to my mom how one day I would want to get my own pair. In 2024 this dream of little me came true, as I got into Tamk and bought my own purple overalls. Since then I’ve gone to loads of student events and collected many patches. These patches have been sown in by hand and blood over many days while watching TV or chatting with friends. In my experience, being able to wear my overalls and attending student events makes me feel deeper connection to my peers.
