When I think about Finnishness, one of the first things that comes to mind is that the way Finnish people make relationship feel so natural and comfortable. When you are with Finnish people, you quickly realise you don’t have to try hard – they accept you as you are.
As a foreigner, I am often asked what I like about Finland by Finnish people. Of course, the nature, the peaceful atmosphere and the sauna culture are amazing, but to me the most impressive thing is the feeling of being with Finnish people.
The ability to be comfortable in silence is something very special about Finnish people, they don’t feel need to fill the air with unnecessary words, and silence is never awkward. Instead, it feels natural.
Another part of the comfort is from respect. Finns value your privacy and personal space, which is why sometimes strangers keep distance (like waiting bus at the station) – sometimes humorously referred as “The Finnish distance”.
Honesty also plays a big role. I have seen two occasions when someone found a phone on the street and they quickly return it to a nearby store so the owner could easily find it.
To me, Finns might look calm and quiet, but inside they carry a very warm heart.
