Meeting 7. Holidays and Food.

Holidays and food are always brilliant topics for discussion!

Today Zichen introduced me to holidays and celebrations in China that we have not discussed before. Now I know that Qiqiao Festival, for example, is characterized as Chinese Valentine’s Day, one of the most romantic traditional celebrations in the country. Another amazing festival is Zhong qiu jie (or Mid-Autumn Festival), when people eat mooncakes and enjoy their time with friends and family under the full moon.

Another curious thing is that in China New Year’s Eve is as important as in Russia, people ring out the Old Year and arrange a Gala evening.

As for the food, Chinese cuisine is famous worldwide and, surprisingly, there are at least 8 different major cuisine types, each of which can be recognized by its special taste.

I am already a big fan of dumplings, but I actually have never tried the Chinese version of them. So I hope that soon I will do that! Some other dishes that are a must-try for foreigners are Peking Duck, Hot Pot, a dish which is divided into 9 sections each containing different mini meals.

And of course, one of the main features of Chinese cuisine is spiciness because chili, garlic, ginger and spices are the core ingredients of the majority of the dishes.

Now I feel inspired to at least go to a Chinese restaurant or try to cook something myself!

Unfortunately, my partner’s schedule and mine are pretty busy but ,hopefully, at the end of the semester, we will go out and eat something traditional!
