Hello from Derby, England!

Our school has insane views from the classrooms (my photo)

In this postcard I will tell you all about my time in Derby, England! Keep reading to find out interesting things about my studies and past time.

My school’s name is University of Derby (yes, suprising and unique name). It has 4 locations, but all of my classes were at the main campus. A free bus takes me straight from my accommodation to the university. I only had three courses, each 10 credits. One is about business strategy, one is about international HR and the third one is about international marketing. All quite interesting! I only had one exam, and all other coursework was in the form of written reports.

In my spare time, (which I had a lot), I joined the school’s squash team. I’ve never played squash before my exchange, but I’ve managed to pick it up quite fast and was even asked to join the university’s team. They withdraw their request when they realized that I’ll be back in Finland before all the big tournaments.

University sports are a big deal in the UK, and our school has teams for almost every sport imaginable. My choice to go with squash was random, I just figured that it would be fun to learn some new games during my stay.

England is known for their pub culture, and a big stretch of my spare time was spent sitting in pubs with my friends. Especially one pub chain, Wetherspoons, became a norm for get-togethers. They have two pound pints all year round, so the prices are very student friendly.

Studying in Derby is almost exactly the same as studying in Finland, if you don’t count the language. Classes are small, and they have a lecture section and a groupwork section. We also have quite a few presentations to do. I found that studying in English is not that difficult, and during my stay I have developed a whole new motivation towards studying. There are no other exchange students in my classes, because we only have seven here and not a single one is studying the same field as me.

I’ve had a great time in Derby and in the UK in general. I love the politeness that people here have. After my stay, I’ll probably visit again to meet my new-found English mates some day (and to eat fish and chips)
