Finnishness

What I value most about living in Finland

I have always lived in Finland. It has been my home for my whole life. I also would say I’m a very typical Finn. I don’t like talking that much and prefer my own company, unless I have had a couple of beers.

There’s a lot of things I love about finnish culture:

Nature

I love how green Finland is. Going to a forest or a nice park makes my head feel rested and less stressed. Finland is also known for being the land of lakes. I actually have never lived more than 2 km away from the nearest lake. I can always find peace when watching the waves.

Long summer nights

This is probably the best thing about Finland. There’s nothing like being out whole night in the summer and it never getting dark. On the other side in the winter it’s almost always dark and many of us, including me, will experience “kaamosmasennus”. 🙁

Finnish movies

I don’t think there’s anything more finnish than Aki Kaurismäki movies. They just have something in them. I love the awkward phrasing, silences, nostalgic atmosphere and how it all just feels like Finland.

Coffee

There’s nothing better (or more finnish) than drinking a cup of dark roast out of a Moomin-mug in the mornings. <3

Silence and respect for other’s spaces

I love that in Finland it’s okay to just nod to someone you know when passing by. No need to ask how they are doing. We finns love our own space and find joy in it.
