My Experiences of Finnishness

I have lived my whole life in Finland, being half-English and half-Finnish, and that mix is honestly a big part of how I see Finnishness.

Growing up in Finland, I have experienced many things that I think are very Finnish. Sauna, spending time in nature, summer cottages, and the fact that people usually give each other plenty of personal space are all familiar parts of my life. At the same time, having an English background has given me another perspective on Finnish culture. I have sometimes noticed things about Finland that feel completely normal to me, but seem unusual to my English relatives.

I have also noticed some differences between Finnish and English culture through my family. Finnish people are often quieter and more private, whereas English people can be more comfortable with small talk and casual conversation. I notice this especially when I am with my English relatives. Things like talking to strangers or having a short conversation with someone you do not know can feel more natural in England, while in Finland people often prefer to keep to themselves. At the same time, I think both cultures value politeness and respect, just in slightly different ways. Having both cultures in my life has made me see that there is no single way to be Finnish.

Being half-English and half-Finnish also means that I do not see Finnishness as one specific thing. It is different for everyone, and I think my own Finnishness has been shaped by both sides of my background. Finland is the place where I have grown up, so even with another culture in my family, Finnish culture still feels very natural to me.
