Finnishness

It took me a while to think what to summary about Finnishness, because there are so many things to tell about. However, here are couple of things I would like to mention about the subject:

Community

Finnish people are known being quite down to earth and quiet. However, I have noticed there are places where they are like whole different person. I have traveled a lot with my family and it has been interesting how abroad Finnish people suddenly notice each other and stop for talking and giving for example opinions or advices. In Finland we often mind our own business and give space. Maybe elsewhere it gives people feeling of belonging when having other people from Finland around, even though they never met before.

Traditions

Personally I enjoy traditions and it feels good to wait and prepare for something ahead. At Christmas, there are the same foods we eat every year and it always tastes as good as before. On Midsummer many people go to cottage and enjoys both sauna and nature. As a student first of May has gotten a whole new meaning when we celebrate with fellow students. There doesn’t always need to be something new or different. For many it is enough to follow the traditions they have used to.
